RE: Cancelled trips due to cost of getting there....

I didn't say I couldn't afford it, I said I couldn't justify it. Another thread said 430% inflation in fuel prices in four years....that's a lot more than $137. My genny burns maybe 3/4 gallon per hour. 4 days is 100 hours, close to a full tank of fuel. (It's normally hot there and like most big DP's we run the gen pretty much all day and night). I could have it sit and rent it out for $1000 a month but what's the point...

Cancelled trips due to cost of getting there....

I hope I'm not repeating thread subject matter too much. I had my heart set on going to Gainesville's drag races this year, I've been loyal since 1998. Gainesville is in the SAME state as me but it would cost me three tanks of fuel, one up, one back and one to run the genny for four days (rough estimates). Before I even buy a hot dog I've spent $1200 in fuel....I couldn't justify it and it broke my heart not to be able to go. Add the destination costs and it would have been over $2K, for a long weekend. Anyone else had sad second thoughts on trips?

RE: nitrogen in tires

Okay, I've thought about it. Here's one for you. On drag racers do the tires burn from the outside in or the inside out (due to heat from friction just like on an airplane)? There is more air circulation on the outside of the tire which should be cooling the rubber faster than on the inside of the tire. Mark Drag racer's tires are burned off from the outside in. That's one of the reasons we use nitrogen...the immediate temp increase does not affect tire pressure, which in our sport is measured in fractions of a PSI. The purpose of the burnout is to clean the tires and give them a tacky, sticky surface in order to prevent spinning them at launch.

RE: Minnie's Meteor Smokehouse Beans (appetizer)

I don't see why not. Asparagus would be good too.

Minnie's Meteor Smokehouse Beans (appetizer)

This is a recipe for an appetizer. It is hot, spicy green beans you pick up and eat one at a time. They are addictive, and very popular here in Key West from the Meteor Smokehouse. They go great with BBQ or anything off the grill. MINNIE'S BEANS *Sautee chopped onions and sliced/diced red & green peppers, set a side (I add a little garlic) *Clean & dry some fresh green beans *Pour about 1/4" oil into pan (I use olive) and heat. Add green beans and stir fry them (I watch for them to change to that nice bright green color and are still crunchy) *Add onions and peppers back in, add crumbled cooked bacon *Stir in House of Tsang Szechuan Spicy Stir Fry Sauce (or similar), enough to coat. Sautee covered a few minutes. Serve hot. Notes: I use the regular House of Tsang Szechuan Stir Fry sauce and mix in a little bit of the spicy one with it. We like them mild. You can find this in most grocery stores. I have also made these ahead of time for about 50 people. After stir frying beans(when doing this I actually under cook them a bit) & adding onions/peppers/bacon, add to large casserole dish with just a little bit of the sauce & mix. Do not cover until cool or they will get soggy. I reheat them in the oven on low until warm, microwaving sauce and adding before serving.

RE: Stinky Fridge!

I've always had a friend in bleach....for fridges, bait freezers and fish coolers. The baking soda thing is a myth, by the way: This is a very clever and successful marketing ploy by the baking soda people, but the fact is that baking soda is very poor at absorbing odors. It seems to make sense, however, so lots of people have spent untold billions of dollars to put boxes of baking soda in their fridge or freezer to no effect. Activated charcoal would work much better but is expensive. Better to wrap your food and clean the fridge once in a while. Source: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00388.htm

RE: nitrogen in tires

We use them in our tires for racing---the tire pressure is critical and nitrogen is not affected by temperature like O2 is. If you put in 7.5, it will be 7.5 in the morning and 7.5 after a burnout.

RE: Cost of RV Parks

I can't figure out why some will spend $100K on an RV then gripe about a few bucks for a nice spot. Somebody's got to pay taxes on it, clean it, keep it safe and deal with your poopy water when you leave.....and they'll want some $ for all that.

RE: Pulled Pork

Yes it can be frozen, put in heavy bags and roll them to squeeze out air. I personally don't like recipes that include sugary BBQ sauce, I go the Tarheel way (Vinegar, pepper flakes, salt, a pinch of sugar, some lemon juice) but that's just me. (By the way, Tarheels have the God-given right to own the word barbeque).

Well he just dropped it off and split without talking to me. I don't know what the message is there, but I hope we're still going to be able to do business.

RE: Mechanic says don't bother fixing rooftop AC

Katuna, I went to the shop to tow it home and discovered they had jack-knifed it and broke some welds, so I left it there after venting on them what I had learned here. I left it there for them to repair the welds and pick it up tomorrow.

RE: Mechanic says don't bother fixing rooftop AC

I never mentioned 17 years old. The trailer is a 2000 so it's at least that young.

RE: Mechanic says don't bother fixing rooftop AC

Well I talked to the mechanic again and he's really negative about it and wanted to brag about how long he's been in the RV business. The compressor was cycling on and off, so there is gas in it, but he said putting in a saddle valve and adding a pound of gas is a "clusterf***" as he put it. I suggested I don't have a lot of $600 bills lying around. He said I'd spend $300 fixing it, and it "might" work. I'm going to take it out and put in a vent. I feel like the guy just doesn't want the work.

RE: Mechanic says don't bother fixing rooftop AC

cmartin, thank you for insider info. I have a spare unknown ac in the garage I bought for $100, I'm going to rig 110 to it tomorrow and see if she blows cold. Otherwise I'll fill the hole with a vent. The trailer is too old and small to put $500+ into. Maybe even a 5-6000 BTU window unit in the front of the trailer for $100. Def. not a new replacement, I'm not giving them the profit....I'll never get it back.
